Afognak Island: Phase 2
Providing Public Access to the Northern Coast
In the second phase of the Perenosa Bay Coastal Protection Project, ALC and its partners are working to acquire a total of 6,173 acres for the state of Alaska. Success will result in protecting the third most salmon-rich river in Perenosa Bay and secure the first public access corridor connecting state and federal conservation areas, thereby creating a contiguous stretch of over 100 coastal miles and 185,000 acres.
Afognak Island's rich, natural resources have been recognized by the federal government since 1892. The island's significant populations of fish, sea birds, marine mammals, bald eagles, Kodiak brown bears and Roosevelt elk thrive in a temperate climate with variegated forest, meadow and mountainous landscapes. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the U.S. Forest Service have chosen Afognak in nationally competitive grant programs, to fund conservation on coastal lands containing extensive wetland and estuarine habitat. In addition to the exceptional wildlife resources of Perenosa Bay, nine aboriginal Native settlements have been mapped by the Smithsonian Institute on the phase two parcels.
