Modoc National Wildlife Refuge
A Refuge in the High Desert
One in a chain of National Wildlife Refuges along the Pacific Flyway, which extends from Alaska to Mexico, Modoc National Wildlife Refuge is an important resting and feeding area for migratory birds and home to more than 250 species of birds and a variety of wildlife. Located in a high desert valley on the western edge of the Great Basin, the refuge is part of a large complex of wetlands and lakes that provide habitat for ducks, geese, sandhill cranes and other birds.
ALC acquired 325 acres for the refuge. Public uses include wildlife watching, fishing, waterfowl hunting, hiking, boating and photography.
