Carbondale Wetlands

Protecting migratory bird habitat and community green space
ALC, in partnership with Green Earth, Inc. and the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation, protected 126 acres of forested wetlands in the heart of Carbondale Illinois that is home to deer, beaver, waterfowl, migratory songbirds, and other wildlife. The site provides habitat for six bird species determined by the state to be in greatest need of conservation, including the willow flycatcher, Bell’s vireo, black-billed cuckoo, yellow breasted chat, Kentucky warbler, and cerulean warbler. This property also protects water quality, helps mitigate flood damage, and preserves a riparian corridor to Crab Orchard Creek, thus maintaining connectivity among local wetland complexes.

The area will soon be open to the public and Green Earth Inc. will be creating interpretive nature trails that will be used in part for conservation education programs for local school children.
