Cypress Creek Refuge I

Reducing forest fragmentation

The 140-acre Cypress Creek Refuge I property holds tremendous potential for wildlife habitat restoration, public recreation, and education. Located within the Cypress Creek National Wildlife Refuge acquisition boundary and bordered on 2 sides by lands already owned by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), the property was a high priority acquisition for the USFWS.

The goal of Cypress Creek National Wildlife Refuge is to re-create large blocks of historic hardwood bottomlands in order to support neo-tropical migratory birds. The addition of this 140-acre parcel to the refuge helps reduce forest fragmentation and enables the USFWS to add to a contiguous block of land targeted for forest restoration and enhancement. The land was previously used for agriculture, but conservation of the parcel and restoration as wildlife habitat will ultimately benefit sensitive neo-tropical migratory bird species, including Cerulean Warbler, Worm-Eating Warbler, Kentucky Warbler, Acadian Flycatcher, and Wood Thrush.

Acquisition of this tract not only provides habitat benefits by connecting it with adjoining refuge lands, but also provides additional wildlife-oriented recreation opportunities for refuge visitors.
