Glacial Springs
Ensuring Clean Water for Native Trout in Wisconsin
In northern Wisconsin, glacial springs feed Middle Creek, a pristine water source for the Iron River National Fish Hatchery. The hatchery opened in 1979 to raise coaster brook trout, native to the tributaries of the Lake Superior basin. Coaster populations have declined precipitously in the wild, and the fish are now the focus of an intense restoration effort by the Great Lakes Fishery Commission.
ALC acquired 320 acres in the watershed where development could degrade the hatchery’s water supply. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service now owns the land, ensuring plentiful and clean water for the hatchery.
